Do you have customized favicon for your WordPress website? Do you even know what a favicon is?

A favicon is that tiny icon that shows up in your browser next to your URL. Most WordPress themes have a default favicon set that relates to their own brand. For instance, have you ever noticed the black box with the white ‘G’ inside it? Yep, that is a Genesis theme created by the folks over at StudioPress. :)

With just a few minutes of your time you can update your WordPress website’s favicon to compliment your website or brand. The first thing you’ll need to do is create the ‘favicon.ico’ file. You might consider your logo, initials, or even your photo. Regardless of what you choose to go with you’ll need to use a service like Favicon from Pics or  Faviconer.com to create your ico file so let’s start there:

Favicon from Pics
This is a great tool if you’d like to use a photo. I’ve used this tool for my own favicon. It also has options for animated favicons if you want to give those a try. Simply upload your image and when your page reloads you’ll see the preview and you’ll be able to download your favicon package.

Faviconer
This is a great tool if you’re using a basic logo design or if you’d like to use letters for your favicon. If you’re looking to use a photo I’d use Favicon from Pics.

Draw your Favicon:

Make any changes to your Favicon and Download:faviconer-3

After you’ve created your favicon your next step will be either locate the area in your theme’s settings to add your own favico.ico’s url.

If your theme doesn’t have an area to specify your custom favicon that’s okay too. You can try the WordPress Plugin “All in One Favicon.” This free plugin will allow you to specify the file you’d like to use for your favicon for your website and for your WordPress admin area. Just install the plugin and access the settings and upload your favicon file, you’ll be all set.

It may take clearing your cookies before your favicon appears. Just be patient it will show up eventually. :)

Ta-Da! Your customized Favicon!

I’m betting you can do this in 30 minutes or less! Who’d have thought it’d be that simple to update your favicon to one that would compliment your website or brand?

Melissa

P.S. If you found this post helpful feel free to share it with others. Dont’ forget to come back and let me know you’ve updated your own Favicon so I can check it out too. :)
